This Hair Serum Made a Nighttime-Ritual Convert Out of Me

I am not a nighttime ritual person. I don’t light candles before bed, I don’t journal and every “self-care Sunday” I’ve ever attempted has stalled somewhere around step three, usually with me watching reruns of Sex and the City. So when a hair serum promises to work while you sleep with a side of relaxation, my instinct is to chalk it up to lofty marketing.

Enter Innersense’s Overnight Repair Serum ($42), which launches exclusively at Ulta and Ulta.com today and genuinely made me stop and take a breath before using it. Not metaphorically, but literally, as the brand builds that before-bed pause into the instructions.

When I saw co-founder Greg Starkman last month, he walked me through why: “Bond repair exists. Brands have proven you can rebuild hair structurally, and consumers now expect it. But it lives in the lab: synthetic bond builders, technical language, a treatment you schedule. What no one has done is bring all of it together—true repair at the cortex and cuticle, clean chemistry and a functional wellness ingredient—in a single overnight formula.”

And what a formula it is. According to the brand, hydrolyzed moringa oleifera seed protein acts as a naturally derived stand-in for the synthetic bond builders used in many repair treatments. Its amino acids are designed to penetrate the hair cortex and bind to keratin sites, helping reinforce damaged areas rather than simply coating the hair.

“It won’t over-proteinize or make hair brittle,” explains Hana Sheikh of Innersense’s product development team, which is the part that mattered to me, since a lot of protein treatments I’ve tried before have left my ends feeling like straw by day three. Tamanu oil handles the outer layer, helping to smooth the cuticle and seal in moisture. And then there’s lavandin extract, which isn’t in the formula for repair at all; it’s there for you. “It’s an immunocosmetic that awakens the olfactory senses to support restful sleep,” Sheikh explains. “It connects the repair to the rest.”

Here’s the first-person story: I put this on my dry ends, brushed my hair, went to sleep with a strategically placed scrunchie and woke up to hair that looked like I’d had a blowout the night before. Not merely smoother or more “manageable,” but shiny, silky and bouncy. The smell is amazingly spa-like, my roots weren’t greasy and there was no rinsing required—the product seemed to disappear into my hair by morning.

Starkman calls this a “ceremony rather than a routine,” and the more he explained it, the more it sounded like the actual point. “It’s where this company began,” he told me. “Joanne and I came out of the professional salon world, and we saw firsthand how beauty and wellbeing are inseparable—what you put on your body matters, and so does how you care for yourself. When we looked at the repair category, everything focused on correcting damage; almost nothing considered the person behind the hair.

We asked ourselves: What if a treatment could repair hair and create a moment to slow down and reset at the end of the day? That’s why we call it a ceremony rather than a routine. The Lavandin extract isn’t decoration—it signals to your senses that the day is done.” But he was careful to draw a line: “Wellness isn’t a softener for the science…the overnight window is when repair can happen uninterrupted. Rest is the mechanism, not the mood. Real repair happens during rest. That’s true for hair, and it’s true for people.”

According to testing provided by the brand, the formula left hair 2.3 times stronger and sealed 96 percent of split ends after one use. But the effect I wasn’t prepared for wasn’t just the blowout-worthy hair; it was behavioral. This is the first hair product that’s gotten me to actually stop at night instead of collapsing into bed mid-scroll. It didn’t add a step to my routine so much as give my routine an ending.

Application is simple, which matters at 11 p.m. when nobody wants a seven-step process. “Make it the last step of your day,” Starkman says. “Dispense the serum into your hands, rub your palms together to awaken the formula and pause for a deep, intentional breath. Work it through damp or dry hair from mid-lengths to ends, layering more where hair needs it—it’s layerable by design, so fine hair can use a light touch, and coarser or curlier textures can build up richer coverage without residue. Then, go to sleep.”

His stylist tip, which I’ve stolen, is to smooth a small amount onto dry hair during the day to tame frizz and refresh the ends without the greasy-by-noon problem that usually comes with daytime touch-ups.

If you’ve written off “overnight repair” as a category that overpromises, this is the one worth exempting from that skepticism. It’s not simply a gimmick wearing a wellness label—the formula takes a thoughtful approach to repair, and I noticed a difference after one night. Use it nightly on damp or dry ends, keep a little in your bag for the stylist trick and let the ritual part happen on its own.
